Polo Home

It was an unpromising start to the day, weather-wise, certainly down in Hampshire but seemed to cheer up as every dreary mile of the M3 disappeared into the rear-view mirror; in fact on arrival at Guards Polo Club it had become distinctly warm if a little bit on the breezy side.

The afternoon was set for the Duke of Wellington Trophy Final which was to be settled between Ocho Rios (who had been successful on the Bank Holiday Monday just down the road at Coworth Park in The Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy, against Clarita) and Altu.

The Teams:

Altu (Black): 1, Ben Turner; 2, Pancho Marino; 3, James Harper and Bk Darren Mercer

Ocho Rios (White):1, Simon Holley; 2, John Martin; 3, Glen Gilmore and Bk Chris Hyde

Ocho Rios started with a ½ goal lead due to the replacement of Ed Higginbottam by John Martin at the eleventh hour.

The game got of to a rapid start with Altu taking four early goals to Ocho Rios clawing two back and this seemed to set the way the match was going to go from the first chukka; however by the end of the second chukka Ocho Rios had certainly steadied themselves and managed to regroup thanks to goals from Glen Gilmore and Chris Hyde leaving the half-time score a respectable 6 -4½ in Altu's favour. The third chukka saw things slowing down a bit with a 40yd penalty converted by Chris Hyde for Ocho Rios and for Altu Ben Turner scoring off a chance created by James Harper leaving the score going into the fourth and final chukka at 7 -5½ to Altu. The final chukka saw Chris Hyde convert a further two penalties for Ocho Rios only to be frustrated by a goal by Altu through Ben Turner scoring from over 40 yards out and a final goal from James Harper.

The final score was 9 - 7½to Altu... ADSL users view the slideshow (pdf)
